With the birth of Women Football Federation of India (WFFI) in 1975 : A new era in Indian Sports

With the birth of Women Football Federation of India (WFFI) in 1975 a new Chapter in the history of Indian Sports opened. The federation made hectic efforts for the development and expansion of Womens Football in the Country. The first significant event was to organised Inter-Zonal League for Kamala National Trophy from 3rd to 7th January, 1976 at Nagpur, following the zonal wise tournaments - East, West, North, South and Central.

The continued efforts of the WFFI cannot be underestimated as it sowed the seed of Womens football in this Soil and nurtured to make it par with other countries.

In Manipur, the AMSA followed the national movement for the introduction of Womens Football in 1976 to the extent of organizing league tournaments at Imphal pologround with a Prestigious Trophy - "Dhanachandra Memorial Trophy" ESU and TRAU were the winners and Runners Up of the inaugural league.

When the AMSA was bifurcated following the principles of One Administration one Discipline in 1976, the Manipur Women Football Association (MWFA) was formed and affiliated to WFFI. Since then, a great impetus in women football was noted under the patronage of MWFA in the state.

However, a turn came following a decision of FIFA taken on 19 May 1984 in Zurich directing all footballing activities thus also women’s football must be controlled by the National Association affiliated to FIFA. As advised by the FIFA, its Technical Department investigated the different structures of Women’s football and their integration in the National Association and finally evolved two possible solutions :

a) The direct integration of Womens Football as a Special section belonging to the National Association. or
b) A mere independent organisation remaining under the control of the National Association.

FIFA directed the National Associations to produce harmonious development of Women’s Football within the big family of FIFA. On May 22, 1985 the Asian Football Confideration (AFC) directed all the Asian Ladies Football Federations that at the National Level the Women football be brought under the Control of National Association by adopting either of the two possible solutions evolved by the Technical Development of FIFA.
